If by "generics" you mean STL, it is my understanding that creates cross-platform problems, which is why many cross-platform C++ projects don't use it.

But yes, I'm perfectly ready to accept self-imposed limitations. It's been a while since I did C++ in anger, so happy to listen to whomever is doing it currently for real things.
