Shalom all, Are the Chelm stories Polish stories?Yiddish stories? Jewish stories? Or all of these? I'm asking because our local newspaper prints a folktale each week in the weekly local magazine section and today's story, "The Language of Chelm," was described as a Polish tale. The names of the characters were all familiar: Rachel, Moishe, Chaim, etc. I'm reasonably sure that those are not specifically Polish names. Do I have any reason to complain to the re-teller of the Chelm story (Amy Friedman, whose retellings are what appears in this section) or to the newspaper (the Kansas City Star) or to the syndication company which distributes Amy Friedman's folktales (Universal) ?
Am I being too much of a curmudgeon over this? I feel failing to give credit where credit is due (i.e. Chelm stories are Yiddish/Jewish stories) in this instance may be one example of (quiet) anti-Semitism. Todah rabbah!
