Zlateh the goat, and other stories, originally published in 1966 had Chelm stories. This is many year after the 1930's

In my experience his references were very useful, drawn from his mesora/tradition. ii - My teacher, Mar (Mister) Stern told us stories about Kton ton Bagelhoff, also stories about the people of Chelm. I don't know if I found that my lif was so much better than the people of Chelm, rather I thought that the stories represented the wisdom of the simple people in a world that is often amuk - in contrast to morality tales that line everything up with perfect villians and saints. Mar ( Jay ) Stern and his Bashert, Giveret (Sue) (K)Cotler, were our teachers in 1946. This was at a small Hebrew School in Brooklyn, N.Y. After they married and left, I never heard news of them. But the stories and all that they set out to teach us remains like spoonfuls of honey. It was all digested with joy. I report this simply to be a witness to the life of the telling of the stories here in America.
