Primetime War
A 50 minute documentary, dealing with the role of the media in the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Primetime War followed the story of two
cameramen - Jimmy Michael, a Palestinian cameraman from Bethlehem, working
for the BBC, and Alon Bernstein, an Israeli cameraman from Jerusalem,
employed by the Associated Press. For a period of one year, Primetime War
followed the cameramen at work, as well as during their leisure time.
Awards:
First prize in the International Actual Awards, Barcelona (1998). Primetime
War was selected as part of the British selection for screening in the
INPUT '99.

Journey to Jerusalem

Circles of Belief
The film follows the life of Israel G, born in a kibbutz in 1953 and
sentenced in 1980 to a prison term in Norway on a charge of drug dealing.
We first met him in 1990, a reborn Jew, married with six children, and
followed him day and night with his family in Safed. Here, high in the
forests of this holy city, he sings and calls aloud to God. Here we created
the film "Gates of Return".
In summer 2000, we meet Israel again, filming him, his wife and their 11
children in their fascinating ultra-orthodox way of life. By mixing the
updated footage with what we shot in 1990 we created this new film:
"Circles of Belief".

Battle of Jenin
April 2002. Jenin refugee camp, The West Bank. Israeli army units try to
take over the camp from Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Fatah militants. As
the Israelis advance into the camp, they realize their arrival has been
anticipated. In every corner in the camp, explosive devices and booby-traps
are set. Palestinian snipers hiding in the houses hit the Israelis almost
upon arrival.
Nine days after the beginning of what looked like a swift, almost ordinary
operation, 23 Israeli soldiers are dead, more than 50 Palestinian militants
and civilians are dead, with massive destruction of houses and civilian
structures in the center of the camp.
What happened in Jenin? The Israelis claim it is proof of the humanitarian
guidelines they followed. An air strike would have been an easy solution
for Israel, but many more Palestinians would have died if airplanes had
attacked the camp. The Palestinians see Jenin as an icon of heroism. In the
history of Palestinian resistance, the battle of Jenin is somewhat of a
"Massada", heroically fighting until the last bullet, until all are dead.
Battle of Jenin brings for the first time testimonials of the people who
fought the battle, from both sides: Israeli reserve soldiers and
Palestinian militants describe the preparation to the battle and the
horrible fighting that followed. The movie includes extraordinary footage
filmed weeks before the beginning of the battle. It makes a very simple
point: both sides knew the outcome, and willingly sent people to die in Jenin.
The UN declared that there was no massacre in Jenin, accepting the Israeli
claims. But the real story is not about cruelty or barbarism. It is about
stupidity and carelessness, and about the sheer arrogance of politicians
from both sides, sending their people to die in a battle that bears no
significance, no importance whatsoever.
Footage was taken in Jenin refuge camp in January 2002 and May 2002,
shortly after the fighting ended.

Dugit Over Troubled Waters
The film tells the story of Dugit, a small Israeli fishing village near the
border with the Gaza strip. It describes the lives of two fisherman
families over the course of two years.
The film's opening describes a period in which fishing partnerships were
established between Israeli fishermen from Dugit and Palestinian fishermen
from Gaza. There, between the sand dunes and the sea, real peace blossomed
- not with treaties and politicians, but between ordinary people leading
ordinary lives.
Dugit's 19 families lived in caravans in relative harmony. Eyal and Tova
Goren had abandoned a profitable career in high-tech and, together with
their two children, settled in Dugit. Rony Cohen arrived there from the
southern Israeli city of Beer-Sheva, where he had worked as a carpenter.
Then, in October 2000, came the Al Aqsa riots, and Israeli-Arab relations
worsened. The Gaza fishermen were forbidden to put to sea. Palestinians
shot at the village at night, and the calm was shattered by the sound of
gunfire.
The atmosphere on the beach darkened. The Israeli fishermen started working
alone and their relationship with their Arab friends had to be maintained
by cell phone. Two large booby traps exploded near a bus driving Dugit's
children to school. The little village slowly turned into a military
position, defended by soldiers, tanks, and a thick concrete wall.
Many of the residents in Dugit decided to leave. Etty, Roni Cohen's wife,
left with their children for a safer place. Roni stayed in Dugit on his
own, fixing crab and fish cages. Eyal Goren decided to give up fishing and
return to the world of high-tech.
