Subject: Networked Reference Protocol--Now Out-For-Review

Networked Reference Service Protocol Now Out-For-Review

NISO invites you to participate in the review the draft documents that will
form the basis for the for the networked reference service protocol being
developed by NISO Standards Committee AZ. The documents are at this url:
http://www.loc.gov/standards/netref The review period closes: November 7,
2003.

Background
The Committee was formed in 2002 to define communications protocols that
would enable interchange of messages between different networked reference
domains. Using this protocol will enable questions that can not be
answered within a service domain using a particular reference system
product to be forwarded to another domain for response.

The Committee has developed an extensive set of use cases from which a
functional model and protocol specification have been derived. The
Question/Answer Transaction Protocol documents include: Overview -
Describes the goals, audiences, and anticipated uses and benefits for these
various audiences. Use Cases - Descriptions of the many activities and
specialized capabilities needed in the protocol, from a user perspective.
Functional Model - Model of the Use Cases that the protocol is required to
support. Protocol Specification - Specification of a set of rules for
communication between two systems to carry out the activities identified in
the Functional Model.

Your questions and comments are welcome and should be sent to the committee
at this email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Next Steps: Simultaneous with this review a Committee AZ subgroup is
testing various aspects of the protocol with the goal to explore issues
and, in particular, to better identify metadata requirements. The
Committee plans to follow the Public Review and testing with revision of
the protocol, after which an XML schema for the protocol will be developed
and a Trial Use period will be set.

Congratulations to Standards Committee AZ for reaching this first major
milestone. Members of the Committee include: Sally McCallum, Committee
