In "Library: An Unquiet History" there is a mention of genizas. In Jewish tradition ritual texts, especially texts that mention God, could not be destroyed. Genizas were storehouses to contain these texts that could not be destroyed when their useful life was up. This made me think of a library that I read about that I believe is in Chicago that collects books that other libraries or institutions are discarding. They accept a discarded book if they can find that less than a certain number of libraries own that title. Does anyone on the LBC list know the name of this library? Illinois did a survey asking about the interest of a last copy center. See www.niulib.niu.edu/ccm/IBHE_99-00.html New Hamshire apparently has one.
