The head of my day school wants me to consider allowing students to check out their own books on our automated system. I would most likely be in the library to supervise at first. It is a simple process since we have a scanner. The student would just have scan the bar code on their library card, scan the barcode on the library book and click on print to print out a date due receipt. I am however hesitant to start letting the students use the library system. Many of the students at our school very computer savvy and even though I have password protections, I think they might eventually figure out how to get into other parts of the library system such as patron info, cataloging,etc. Our day school is K-8, but she wants me to start with 4th grade.
Has anyone had experience allowing students to check out books on an automated system? I would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance!
