Many years ago I observed at a K-8 public school library that was automated with Winnebago. This is the system the librarian used, successfully:
all of the students' barcodes were in a 3-ring binder, arranged by grade, and within each grade, alphabetized by last name. students went over to the desk with the 3-ring binder and bar-wand, found their barcode, and zapped their barcode and their books; there were date-due cards there for the students to put in the book pockets. The librarian watched as the children managed just fine. I agree it's a good idea to have an adult supervising.
