If Hanna Geshelin was refering to my Oct. 10 message when she stated
on Oct. 14: "For materials written since 1978, the law is lifetime of
author plus 70 years, not 50 as stated in a previous message", please
note that I was responding to the original inquiry, which was from a
librarian or teacher in new Zealand. The rule cited by Ms. Geshelin
is correect for the USA *only*. Some other countries, mainly in the EU,
have moved to life + 70 for the term of protection, but most have not
done so (eg. Canada, New Zealand). Indeed, the standard required by the
major international copyright conventions is still life + 50. However,
I very much agree with Ms. Geshelin when she said that "copyright laws
are complicated". That's why I suggested the inquirer consult someone
in her/his own bailiwick!
