The Bible in Rabbinic Interpretation Derashot on Prophets and Writings in Talmudic and Midrashic Literature Volume One: Hoshea
Menahem Ben-Yashar, Isaac B. Gottlieb, Jordan S. Penkower
The authors have assembled all the derashot in midrashic and talmudic literature which deal with verses from the Book of Hosea. Each derasha is explained on its own terms and in relation to the biblical text: what difficulties did the derasha encounter in the text and what solutions did it propose.
A comprehensive introduction examines the history of research on all aspects of this question, explains the objectives of the book and the methods adopted. . The large body of material in this volume (c. 750 derashot) affords an opportunity to examine a fundamental question: should the Sages comments be regarded as biblical exegesis - a reaction to textual difficulties - or were the derashot only a literary form used by the Sages to put forward their own ideas and connect them to the Bible?
A brief summary at the end of each chapter of Hosea gives the plain sense of the text, followed by an outline of the derashot and their main themes. In this way the distinction between peshat and derash is highlighted, as is the dual function of many derashot. The book concludes with copious indices: biblical verses cited in the derashot; verses in the footnotes; sources from rabbinic literature; classification of all the derashot according to perceived problems and proposed solutions.
The authors teach in the Department of Bible and are members of the Institute for the History of Jewish Bible Research, Bar-Ilan University.
