My first thought is In The Image by Dara Horn. It beautifully weaves Jewish history, religion and culture into the plot which deals with what is lost and what is gained; what is discarded and what is treasured. There are wonderful reviews out there, so I won't try to recreate them. I loved this book. It has characters of all ages, so there's a good chance your congregant will appreciate it, too.
