A few years ago I made some field trips to local synagogue libraries to
see what other folks do, trying to update my synagogue's. I was sad to
hear, in these upper middle class communities that books are often not
returned, at least not without much prodding via phone, etc.  One place
said they leave a cart near the sanctuary before services so people
could drop off returns there. Another said start with the children,
maybe that can get the parents to return their own selections.
