Alba, What a wonderful way to think outside of the box! Can you all imagine a floating AJL convention down the Mississippi? It's actually a very nice idea (living close to the Mississippi River, I could see some interesting sessions). We are tradition-bound in what and how we do the convention. I hope that we can all think outside the box when planning for future conventions.
I plan on going to Boston, and my family will join me afterwards, 'cause who could resist seeing that part of the country (if you live in the sticks of Nashville), but it is going to be pricey (although I hear it's actually pretty reasonable for the area, darn it!) and I hope that there will be options (like maybe some folks could stay in the dorms of the local universities and have shuttles available?). I know the Boston AJL folks will do a great job with housing options. They have a whole year to help us get there! It's good to debate these issues, but if you've never run a convention, you have no idea how complicated it can get, and how many folks weigh in on the end result. I'm personally hoping to do a convention here in Nashville (not in the next 4 years, thank you!), so maybe that would help out (centrally located - in the U.S.!, good airport, kashrut, lots of hotels, and for those who like it, country music!). But, I have to recruit some other Jewish librarians (and other kind folks) from the community. I'll let you know. Anyway, Hag Sameach (July 4th) and have a great summer! See you in June 2006 in Boston (hopefully) or the year after. Susan p.s. Kudos to the great Oakland convention. I had a ball (even if I didn't see the Golden Gate except through the window of the hotel - my fault - poor timing). I appreciated the efforts of Fred, Paul, Zachary, Henry, Diane, Hillary, Judy, and Robin (as well as the rest of the outstanding committee).
