III. Presidents Report Linda Silver
A. SSC Accomplishments 2004-2005
1. The Outreach Task Force chaired by Rachel Kamin created the Jewish
Stars bibliography to help teachers, librarians, and parents identify
recommended books with Jewish themes that will help children learn about
the Jewish religion, Jewish culture, Jewish history, Israel, and
contemporary Jewish life. It is available from the AJL website.
2. SSC Vice-President Anne Dublin received a 2004 Sydney Taylor Honor
Award for her book Bobbie Rosenfeld: The Olympian Who Could Do
Everything. She also won the Canadian Jewish Book Award for Childrens
Literature and received an award from the Imperial Order of the Daughters
of the Empire for the best Canadian childrens book published in 2004. SSC
member Rosalind Reisner received the R & S Reference Book Award for her
Guide to Jewish American Fiction. Other SSC members with books published
in the last year: Anna Olswanger (Shlemiel Crooks), Diane Rauchwerger
(Dinosaur on Hanukkah), and Hava Ben Zvi and Bracha Weisbarth.
3. Andrea Rapp wrote an excellent article, Lies in the Library,
about bias in childrens books about Israel in the summer issue of Reform
Judaism Magazine. It is available at www.reformjudaismmag.org along with a
list of Books You Can Count On.

initiative.
