This volume fills an important niche in Jewish Studies, French Studies, Women's Studies, and Multicultural Studies, by making available in English translation, the works of twenty-one Franco-Jewish women writers. These short pieces in a variety of genres (short stories, memoirs, letters, excerpts from novels, poems) cover a span of one hundred and fifty years. Each piece is preceded by an introduction to the author's life and work. An introductory essay by the editors places these works within the social, cultural, and historical context of the Jewish experience in France. An additional list of Franco-Jewish women writers concludes the book.
