This year, I've begun 3 new reading programs at our religious school,
for grades 4,5, and 6. I've borrowed or adapted programs from my AJL
colleagues, so I'd like to credit you.
Our 4th graders study Israel, so I adapted a program of Jeannette
Radom which she called Books, Trees, and Leaves. I call it: "Eitz
Fun to Read for Israel," and the 4th grade classrooms have a large,
bare tree (bought at a teacher supply store) on the wall. For each
book read (and a short summary card filled out), a leaf with the
child's name and book title is added to the tree. At year's end, our
temple Sisterhood will give $1.00 per leaf to the Israeli tzedaka
project chosen by the students.
5th graders are doing Rachel Kamin's Reading Tic Tac Toe, where
each square of a giant tic tac toe board represents a different genre
of literature. Students put their x's and o's on the board (no
blocking of other students, as they may want to do); every tic tac
toe will win a certificate for a free gourmet ice cream dish, funded
by our Brotherhood.
Finally, our 6th graders have the Sydney Taylor Club, based on
Suzi Dubin's project. As they read and write reports on Sydney
Taylor winners, honor books, or even book by a winning author, they
won a home-made coupon (again, underwritten by our Brotherhood) to
spend at the temple Book Fair. Later in the year we'll have a pizza
party w/ game or very short video for the "members" of this club.
It's harder to get kids in Sunday school involved than it is
with day school children, but we are making the effort.
Thanks to all who so willingly shared their successful projects.
