The new book, Fragmented Families by Ellen B. Sucov, looks at the
phenomenon of family rifts.

When family members turn against each other, refuse to speak, and cut
off contact; is there any hope for a resolution?

In her new book, Fragmented Families (Southern Hills Press, 2006),
psychologist Ellen B. Sucov, examines diverse aspects of family
estrangement from personal, psychological, cultural, and religious
perspectives. The book focuses on the meanings and process of
alienation, its outcomes, and the paths toward its resolution.

Narratives of real families form the heart of this book. Dr. Sucov
focuses on Jewish families and the historical processes and religious
traditions that impact on family life. Some of these families are
still in the midst of the struggle; a few have found ways to rebuild
connections and achieve closure.

The story of a painful, prolonged estrangement in the author's own
family traces the sequence of actions that led to reconciliation.

Fragmented Families provides practical suggestions for strategies to
clarify one's own role in the family and facilitate reconciliation
with estranged family members. The book is intended for a general
readership. It will also be a relevant resource for psychologists,
physicians, lawyers, social workers, and clergy.
