Dear colleagues,
I was so impressed with Andrea Rapp’s reading programs that I’d like
to share what we’re doing, too. This year, I began a “readers’
choice” program which we call the “Olive Branch Book Award.” For
students in grades 3 to 6, I chose 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction books,
including some books by Canadian authors. The students commit to
reading at least 3 books over 5 months. At the end of that period,
they’ll vote for their favourite. We’ll give a fancy certificate to
the winning author, put a sticker on the winning book, AND give
bookmarks and gift certificates to all the participants. Quite a few
kids (and their parents) have already signed up for the OBBA. There’s
a real buzz in our supplementary religious school about the program
and I’m thrilled about the positive comments so far. FYI, here are
the titles of the books:
FICTION
    * Ice Cream Town by Rona Arato
    * Emil and Karl by Yankev Glatshteyn
    * Broken Song by Kathryn Lasky
    * Confessions of a Closet Catholic by Sarah Littman
    * Turned Away by Carol Matas

NON-FICTION
    * The Mystery of the Dead Sea Scrolls by Hagit Allon & Lena Zehavi
    * The Underground Reporters by Kathy Kacer
    * Anne Frank by Josephine Poole
    * The Travels of Benjamin of Tudela by Uri Shulevitz
    * Albert Einstein by Frieda Wishinsky
