Summary of responses to my question about continuing to add VHS tapes to our collections: First many people wrote to say that VHS tapes actually wear much better than DVD's. I also recall reading that public librarians find the same thing, that some DVD's are getting only a few circulations before they are ruined, that patrons use them for coasters, scratch them, and so on. So yes, people are continuing to add VHS tapes to collections. Secondly, I am advised that it is probably within copyright fair use to transfer a VHS to DVD format, and use that one copy. But that needs to be confirmed. Last year when I had our AV equipment serviced, I was advised to hang on to extra VCR's because new ones may become unavailable before long.
