Dear Hasafran friends, I have been negotiating with my higher-ups and lay leaders for money to subscribe to the new on-line Index to Jewish Periodicals. One person responded that I should just use RAMBI online -- a Jewish periodicals index that is free. I was not familiar with RAMBI, so I went to its website and read that RAMBI is "a selective bibliography of articles in the various fields of Jewish studies and in the study of Eretz Israel... mainly from the holdings of the Jewish National and University Library." The website goes on to refer to an editorial board that selects articles to be included in the RAMBI index.
I could not find any listing of periodicals indexed in RAMBI. Nor could I find information about who is on the editorial board or how the articles are "selected" for inclusion. (Is there some potitical or denominational criterion that influences selection?) Nor could I find info about how often RAMBI is updated. Hence, I could not compare RAMBI to the Index to Jewish Periodicals and make an intelligent decision as to whether one is better than (or different from) the other. Can any of you give me more info about RAMBI and your opinion about how it compares to the Index to Jewish Periodicals? Thank you.
