I would like to echo the sentiments of Esther Nussbaum and Susan
Dubin about the need for a certificate program in Judaica
librarianship. This need is particularly acute for people who man
Jewish day school libraries.

School librarians in general are becoming increasingly difficult to
replace. I speak from experience as the retired director of the 12th
largest school library district in Long Island. How much more so is
it difficult to find certified librarians who have a background in Judaica.

The people who service libraries in day schools are often part time,
serving in other capacities within the school as teachers and/or
administrators. Offering a certificate program to these people would
give them the necessary skills to do their jobs in the library
effectively without having to get a complete degree.

I urge the University of Maryland and other library programs to offer
an online certificate program in Judaica librarianship. It would be a
tremendous help to bolstering yeshiva high school education.
