Dear Charlene,

I work with a (very) small synagogue library, 2500 items (books,
DVD's, CDs etc). I am not familiar with CASPR; we use ResourceMate
and I'd suggest you check into them. They are affordable and have
automation available.

Charlene,
We are in the process of automating our collection (under 6,000 volumes)
using Surpass CL. After checking into several programs, we found this to be
perfect for our needs and affordable. You can run a demo through their web
site.

Good luck.

Charlene-

I would take a look at OPALS - a number of school librarians are looking
into it at the moment, and the prices are very reasonable. It is an open
source program, with support and maintenance from a company run by Harry
Chan - who used to be with Mandarin.

I believe the price for a synagogue library is $300/yr for support and
$250/year for server hosting - no IT hassles at all. It is Hebrew-language
and Z39 compatible. We are switching to it in the fall.

The website is http://www.opals-na.org/

Surpass has a good system for small libraries.

Hi Charlene,
We are just a little bigger than you, and we use Resource Mate.
I have not done a retrospective conversion, as it was too expensive
when we switched to Resource Mate, so I continue to print cards as
well as having newer holdings automated.
If you hear of an inexpensive way to do a retrospective conversion,
I'd appreciate learning about it.
Thanks,

I also asked this question recently for our small congregation in Toronto.
Several people suggested a product called ResourceMate Plus
(www.resourcemate.com). It's a Canadian product so your dollar should make
it very appealing. It looked pretty good and came highly recommended by
some other congregations. I also looked at a product called Surpass CL
(www.surpasssoftware.com) but it was a bit too expensive for us, although we
haven't made a final decision. Good Luck.

I am the part-time librarian at a synagogue library in Tulsa,
Oklahoma. We started planning for automation of our approximately
5,000 item library just over a year ago.

Our highest priorities, after cost, included web access to the
catalog and easy software for the volunteers of the library committee
members to use. We looked at Resource Mate, Koha and Surpass CL.
We are very happy with our choice of Surpass CL software. The
support department has been great. The software has been easy for me
to learn and teach to a committee of "technology challenged" volunteers.

We already had many of our records in MARC format using MARC
Magician. Once those records were corrected and downloaded, we have
been going back to add anything missing. Our card catalog was a
disaster of inaccuracies!

Our catalog is almost ready to go live with searching, details of
circulation functions have not been worked out yet since the library
is not staffed most of the time. I can send you the web address if
you want to look at the catalog.

Charlene,

My suggestion would be Surpass <http://www.surpasssoftware.com>. I am an
academic librarian and I'm used to working with high-end automation systems
such as Aleph, Millennium, and Voyager. Having investigated cheaper
alternatives for synagogue libraries, I have found that the system with the
features that come closest to the "big boys" for the least amount of money
is Surpass (it even has some features that academic systems do not have).
You can see an example of a synagogue library installation at the website of
the Isaac M. Wise Temple in Cincinnati <http://www.wisetemple.org>.

Let me know if you have any questions,
Steven Bernstein

Just to note that the non-availability of MARC records for DVDs and CDs is a
non-issue for us, since our regional public library network has most of what
we order and makes the MARCs available, so we can simply copy the records
from its website.
