Hello!
My name is Monika Robbins. I am a sophomore at Mira Loma High School,
an International Baccalaureate school.
I recently wrote a paper titled "Perpetrator, Collaborator,
Liberator: What Do We Tell the Kids?". I read children's books about
the Holocaust in English, French, and German. I compared and
contrasted the points of view of the perpetrator, collaborator, liberator.
This is the abstract:
"Sixty years later, the Holocaust needs to be explained to a
new generation. Childrens literature of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1
ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Germany, France,
and the United States reflect the distinct roles of each country,
although they all support the issues of memory, tolerance, and hope.
Childrens picture books give children their first impressions, so
countries can use them to teach their youngest citizens. Four books
each in German, French, and English were read.
German books, as the books of the perpetrator, have the most
variety of topics. One gave the most concrete description while
another gave the most allegorical.
French books, as the collaborators, stress the resistance
effort and barely mention French collaboration with Germany. The
books emphasize the difference one individual could make in the war.
American books, as the liberators, illustrate moral values or
portray the point of view of the victim. Three of the four books were
published by a Jewish foundation.
All books stress memory, tolerance, and hope. They teach that
the Holocaust must be remembered and that all people are equal. They
hope that the Holocaust will never happen again. The perpetrator,
collaborator, and liberator use childrens picture books to educate
their future populations about the horrors of prejudice and what can
happen if prejudice is allowed to take over."
