Hi Margo, and any others who are seeing dots before their eyes:

This heading was established in 1943, well before the advent of AACR2
rules, the current Hebrew romanization table, or the English
*Encyclopaedia Judaica*. It was derived from the name given to this
author in *The Jewish Encyclopedia" (1916 edition), an authoritative
English-language reference source at the time. The encyclopedia
gives the mark that looks like an umlaut (it's called a "diaeresis")
over the "i" in "Meir," so that's what went into the heading.

Perhaps you cannot see it in your catalog, but there is a 952 note in
the authority record saying "RETRO," which means that the heading was
not reformulated by AACR2 rules when they became available.
