When the Los Angeles Bureau of Jewish Education failed to recognize
the importance of having a library in their standards of
accreditation several years ago, AJLSC wrote letters to all the Board
members citing the research on the importance of libraries vis-a-vis
school achievement. We were told that they recognized the importance
of libraries, but budget didn't allow some schools to have one
professionally staffed. We compromised with wording that said the
school needed to have access to a library. Not exactly the same. I am
still unhappy about it.

At the AJL Council we agreed that AJL should take a stand in
promoting the importance of libraries. Now we need to come up with an
action plan! Any volunteers to help work on this?
