Information Resources Specialist Senior (Hebrew and Yiddish language)

The following library (non-librarian) position in the 
Judaica/Hebraica unit of the Near East Division of Library Area 
Programs has recently been posted at the University of Michigan 
University Library. With the exception of the hours—which for some 
reason, are listed as "15" on the University's Career Website—and 
text in square brackets [added to clarify some ambiguous sections], 
what is reproduced below is exactly as it appears in the official 
position announcement; if you go to the site to apply for this 
opening, please keep this discrepancy in mind: this is a one-third 
[1/3] time position, and thus is 13 hours/week, not 15:


Department: Library Area Programs

Job Title: Information Resources Specialist Senior (Hebrew and 
Yiddish language)

Hours: 13 hours/week

FLSA:  Exempt

Target Salary Range: $16,000 - $17,000 annually for this 13 hr./week 
position, depending on qualifications and experience of selected candidate.

NOTE: A review of applications will begin on February 29, 2008 and 
continue until the position is filled.

DUTIES:
Cataloging and cataloging support: Performs complex original and copy 
cataloging, and classification of materials in all formats in Hebrew 
[and] Yiddish. Creates and edits MARC records (including multiscript 
Hebrew and/or Yiddish records for materials in the Hebrew alphabet) 
according to nationally and locally established procedures and 
standards. Performs local name and series authority work in 
conformity with local and national standards. Performs complex local 
catalog maintenance.

Acquisitions:  Serials check-in and oversight of approval plan 
invoices or may supervise hourly Near East staff.

NATURE OF CONTACTS:

The person in this position: reports to the Judaica Curator; works 
closely with other Near East Division staff, counterparts in other 
Area Programs units, and other external technical services staff, to 
coordinate technical processing and to expedite access to resources; 
responds to staff and public requests for information, or directs 
these requests to appropriate staff according to unit guidelines. Job 
Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors degree. Experience in an academic or research library or 
comparable experience. Good reading knowledge of Hebrew and/or 
Yiddish. Ability to perform detailed work precisely, quickly, and 
independently. Ability to adapt to change and work in a production 
oriented environment. Good interpersonal and communication skills and 
the ability to work well with others.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of an additional Hebrew script language.  Familiarity with 
Jewish history and culture.  Some graduate coursework in Jewish 
studies.  Familiarity with OCLC/Connexion, Aleph, or comparable 
computer systems. Knowledge of MARC format, AACR2, LCSH, LC 
Classification and other applicable cataloging standards.
