Best, Anita Hebrew Manuscript Project Cataloger Bibliographic Services & Collection Development The Columbia University Libraries invite nominations and applications for the position of Hebrew Manuscript Cataloger. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections Metadata and Cataloging, the incumbent will provide original cataloging for manuscripts in vernacular Hebrew, transliterated Hebrew, English and other related languages such as Yiddish, Ladino, or Judeo-Arabic, aided by the Mendelsohn print catalog and Hebrew University catalog records. This is a 2 year temporary position with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate will have: - an accredited MLS or an equivalent combination of education and experience - strong working knowledge of Hebrew; the Romanization of Hebrew; and issues related to Hebrew cataloging - working knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures including AACR2, LC subject headings, and MARC21 formats - general familiarity with research procedures - an aptitude for complex, analytical and detailed work - effective verbal and written communication skills Preferred qualifications: professional cataloging experience in a research library; working knowledge of Voyager and OCLC; experience creating bibliographic records in the Hebrew vernacular; and a subject background in Hebrew studies.
