I am looking for a Jewish story about a Shammas who was fired from
his job because he was illiterate. He went on to open a business
which grew and made him a wealthy man. Someone asked him years
later, “Given your success, imagine what you could have become if you
could read and write. He answered that he would still be a Shammas
because he would not have been forced out of his job to fend for himself.

There is a similar story by W. Somerset Maugham called the Verger. I
don’t know which story came first. If anyone can send me the Jewish
version of the story or tell me where to find it, I would be most appreciative.
