Hebrew Literature is a much beloved subject which draws interest from 
Hebrew Language scholars to the casual reader as well as all those 
interested in Israeli and Jewish Culture.



In late 2010 we distributed Dalia Ravikovich Kol ah-Shirim, the 
collected poems of this great and prolific Israeli poet. The work was 
published by Kibbutz Ha-Meuhad, (no isbn.!) and edited by Uzi Shavit. 
A wonderfull addition to any Hebrew, Library collection.

Amnon Lord has written a book entitled 'Rez'ah be'in Yedidim,' on the 
important 20th Cent CE Israeli figure best known as a pioneering and 
leading Israeli magazine publisher, Uri Avneri. This book, well 
written and researched digs to the roots of the political disputes 
between factions in pre-state Palestine. The book is published by 
Dani Sefarim, Qiryat Gat, which to my mind has become an increasingly 
significant publisher in recent years.

The newest novel by A. B. Yehoshua, Hesed Sepharadi, has been 
published by Kibbutz Ha-Meuhad.  The book follows the theme of mercy 
as depicted in a classic Spanish painting. The book is entitled 
'Spanish Charity,' in English. It is another essential in a long list 
of major works by the acclaimed author.

'Mabatim mitztalvim.' By Ziva Shamir is an examination of the 
creative work of A.B. Yehoshua, published by Kibbutz ha-Meuhad. Again 
there is no isbn but the work is a must have for any library

Planning and Conserving Jerusalem / The Challenge of an Ancient City, 
was actually published and released about six months ago (in 2010) by 
the distinguished publisher Yad Ben Zvi. This excellent work is 
attractive and impressive. It is Jewish and World History in that the 
development of Jerusalem embodies historical periods and structures. 
Those in turn reflect political realities for example Herodian and 
Roman construction through Mamluk and Ottoman periods as well as the 
British Mandate period. All this is integral to modern planning and 
development of the modern city of Jerusalem. The book has chapters on 
demography, archaeology, infrastructure, tourism, holy sites and

In the area of legendary Hebrew Literature author S.Y. Agnon, Bar 
Ilan University has published 'Agnon and Germany – the presence of 
the German World in the Writings of S.Y. Agnon. The title speaks for 
itself and the book is the work of two groups of scholars in Germany 
and Israel and was edited by Hans Jurgen – Becker and Hillel Weiss. 
Isbn 978-965-226-368-1. This book is of interest to scholars of 
literature and history and includes a dozen chapters in English by 
ten scholars.

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (and the American Jewish 
Committee) have published, 'American Jewry's Comfort Level, present 
and future, by Manfred Gerstenfeld and Steven Bayme. The book deals 
with issues of Philosophy, Jewish Identity, relations between the US 
and Israel and American Jewry and Israel now and in the future. The 
book has articles/chapters by many important 20th Cent CE Jewish 
figures. The book will be the subject of analysis, controversy and

In the area of Judaism and Rabbinics let us mention three books. 
Covenant and Conversation, by UK Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. The book 
as in the subtitle is on bible, Exodus the Book of Redemption. The 
book is a scholarly modern commentary and exegesis on Shemot by an 
important 20th Cent. CE jewish leader. (other vols. available)

Vision and Valor, is at the same time accessible and popular and 
comprehensive and scholarly. Subtitled, an illustrated history of 
Talmud, the book is about the Sages of the Talmud from the 3rd – 5th 
Cent. CE. It describes different generations of Jewish Scholars and 
their thinking, customs, disputes, sayings and more. Through this 
work an important basis for studying Talmud and Jewish Legal thinking 
and folklore can be established. A golden period of Jewish legal, 
theological and cultural development in Babylonia is examined. The 
work analyzes the thinking and process of creating and editing the 
Talmud. The richness of the Oral Law which is the subject of the 
Mishna and ultimately the Talmud is examined. Even the footnotes 
relating to each chapter at the end of the book are over 50 pages long.

Last but not least, for now, 'In Her Own Voice,' in Hebrew, Hadara 
Tefillat Isha, is a beautiful, bilingual book an illuminated book of 
prayers for Jewish Women. The book is by an artist, Bezalel trained, 
Enya Tamar Keshet and she brings many traditional and some lesser 
known prayers for women, in Hebrew with English translation. There is 
English text and explanation of each entry, which are on subjects 
like marriage, pregnancy, birth, bat mitzvah and even agunot. The 
liturgical poetry in Hebrew is accompanied by marvelous calligraphy, 
artwork and papercut motifs. ISBN 978-965-526-0366. Published by 
Maggid Books an imprint of Koren Publishers Jerusalem.

These books are really outstanding and are recommended for any 
library of Judaica, from the faculty or school library to the shelves
