The role of JPS in Jewish life was not limited to being only a source of subventions for Jewish-interest texts and their authors; JPS was also the publishing institution of, for and by the Jewish people in this country. It is the disappearance of the later that I bemoan. JPS's devolution is mark of failure of the Jewish communal leadership and its imagination precisely at the zenith of evolution of Jewish community in the United States and will speed up the fragmentation of the latter.
