Subject: Arabic-audience specialist

To:

I am writing to seek recommendations for a possible new position here at the

Holocaust Museum. As part of our work to more effectively engage international

audiences, the Museum would like to hire a specialist to help guide outreach to

Arabic-speaking audiences. In 2010 alone, our Web site received more than

455,000 visit from Muslim-majority countries. This demand--coupled with the

lack of legitimacy of Holocaust study in many of these countries--merits a more

nuanced and intensive outreach strategy.

We already have a Farsi-audience specialist on staff, and we would like to

create a parallel position for Arabic. The ideal candidate would be:

* A native Arabic speaker, who has lived in North Africa or the Middle East as

an adult

* Attuned to trends and popular attitudes in the region, including political

sensitivities

* Familiar with modern European history including World War II and the Holocaust

* Comfortable using social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as local

counterparts

* Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

The position would be based in Washington and would be hired on a term basis.

Do you know of any strong candidates? Please think creatively--journalists,

academics, policy analysts. The right personality matters more than the

specific credentials, other than those outlined above. I know you know a lot of

interesting people locally, so I though you might have suggestions.

Thank you in advance for any leads.

Happy 2012,

Edna
