I have just received the extraordinarily sad news of the untimely passing of
Steven W. Siegel, the longtime archivist of the 92nd Street YM&YWHA and former
director of the Buttenwieser Library at the Y.  Steve was a pillar of the
Jewish Genealogical Society of New York as well, having served as its President
(more than once, I believe) as well as in other capacities.

I first got to know Steve in the late 1970s, when he was the co-editor (with
Arthur Kurzweil) of Toledot: The Journal of Jewish Genealogy.  A most
punctilious, detail-oriented editor, it was not surprising for me (as one of
Toledot's regular contributors) to learn that he was a Cornell Engineering
graduate - and a most devoted alumnus at that.  Those who knew Steve can attest
to his personal warmth, his generosity of spirit, and his encyclopedic
knowledge of New York City - past and present.  He will be greatly missed.

Yehi zikhro barukh.
