Assuming that the design of the library will take place within an existing
building, the first items that need to be considered are the availabilities of
the utilities, if you desire a workroom area that might use water or have a
need for clean up concerns, then the location of that room will be directly
associated with the location of the existing plumbing facilities. So that the
consideration of such utilities will be different If the library is small and
the facilities of a toilet are nearby as opposed to being very large and a
distance from such services.  It helps to create models on paper or with toys
which can be easily maneuvered before such decisions are made.

Hello

We have a similar problem here. Our new (2 y.o) vertical campus has no food
service and no lounge for students or teachers. Eating consists of "eat out" or
"eat at your desk." It is hard to enforce a no food or drink policy in a
library when I've got a coffee cup on my desk and have to eat lunch at my desk.
We were able to get a dorm size refrigerator and small coffee maker for the
library.  Our only luck is that the water fountain for the coffee maker is
right outside. What seems ideal to some (the designers) is a headache to others
(the rest of us).

Hi All,

I was not part of the committee at the time when our library was remodeled. I
was hired in after. We do not have a sink and I would have advocated to have
one. We have a small refridgerator and a microwave. I have to go across the
hall to the restroom in order to get water or I walk to the executive offices
which is not in close proximity to the library (they have a larger sink to wash
serving pieces). I would definitely suggest putting a sink in if you have the
choice.

When my office was redone about 5 years ago, the sink was removed and I have

When I attended the convention in Denver I enjoyed  a workshop on library
design.  We can start by putting that  presentation on the Wiki  (if possible
with her permission from the proceedings).  I love  the idea of  a downloadable
podcast.
In my previous reply I forgot to mention the work-room with a sink, safe
exists,  computer connection,  space for copier and public catalog.  It is also
a good idea for a presentation at the Texas convention.

Yes, it is not a small project.  I wonder if it couldn't be funded under a
grant.  Further, I wonder if it couldn't be a graduate thesis or project.
Perhaps it could be a segment of the AJL website with a downloadable podcast.
Lots of way to go, but first is there interest?

I love the idea!  It could be used as a great promotion tool when AJL members

I have been thumbing through Volume 16/17 of Judaica Librarianship which
recently arrived.  There are two articles about distinctive library
collections.  It occurs to me how little most Jewish library users know about
the existence of special collections.  Would it be feasible to develop a
documentary DVD which highlighted these collections?  Synagogues are always
looking for programs and this presentation would not only be generally
informative, but could be used to develop interest and awareness of Judaica
Librarianship.  Further, synagogues interested in fostering their own libraries
could use this as an introduction to the particular attributes of their own
collections.  Is anything like this available?  Any thoughts?
