I am the person responsible for updating the list of links to AJL members'
catalogs available on the internet on the AJL website at
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/main/Resources/MembersrsquoCatalogs.aspx. This
list is compiled solely from member's sending their information to me. There
are 66 libraries on this list, of which 22 are synagogues. I can't be sure that
this perfectly reflects the number of synagogue libraries whose catalogs are
computerized and available on the internet, but it should give some indication.

If your library is not on this list and you wish to be added, please send me
the name of your institution, the URL for your catalog, the cataloging system
you use, and any special instructions for access to/use of your catalog.

Thank you all for your answers and comments. Your responsiveness encourages
me to ask one or two more questions. (No good deed goes unpunished.)

Amalia and Arlene both asked what issues concerned me. At the very least in
order to be linked, libraries would have to be computerized and have internet
access. I don't know how many synagogue libraries currently have arrived at
this status. Does anyone have any statistics?

Eileen mentioned that several libraries in Detroit are loosely linked. Eileen,
do you happen to know what Federation's objective was in effecting this? Is
there an inter-library loan system? Are individuals permitted to borrow from
any library in the system? Wouldn't this be an issue for participating
libraries?

Jean-Claude, Yakov, and Nachum, how are the union catalogues you mention used
and who uses them?

Please forgive me. I'm not very savvy at this. I seem to be reading from the
responses that a Judaic OCLC would be a good idea. I'm trying to nail down why.

Shabbat Shalom and thanks again.

Hello,
I would like to mention to the list the existence of one of an important Jewish
Union Catalogue : the Rachel Network www.rachelnet.org

This is the common work of a group of French Jewish Libraries. It is the result
of the mutual retro conversion of the paper catalogues of the participating
libraries, with the help of the National Libraries of France and Israel. We use
ExLibris ALEPH500, and the catalogue is fully multilingual (Hebrew, Latin,
Arabic).

Altogether, it contains more than 200 000 records (multimedia) from the
following Libraries:
Museum Library)
- Centre français des musiques juives (French Center for Jewish Music).
- AKADEM (videos of conferences on Jewish subjects)

My colleague Guila Cooper, from the Alliance Library, will be present at the
next AJL Convention in Pasadena.

Please contact me if you are interested in joining the Rachel Network.

Best regards to you all

I think we are talking about a Union catalog.

There are two smaller efforts right now, one is at the National Library of
Israel with their ULI catalog which includes most Israeli libraries and several
major Judaica libraries outside of Israel:

http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/uli/

The second is Avi Chai's school union catalog here:

I think that Avi Chai's effort is probably the best example.
