Safranim Shalom --

I sent versions of this note to two of my favorite Safranot but Yossi
Galron said it was OK to send it to the list.

For the last three or four years I've run a listserv for opportunities
in the Jewish community and beyond called Hizdamnuyot. It started in
2008 when things were quite grim and many good people I knew who
interested in working at Jewish organizations were having a very hard
time finding jobs.

It's grown to about 1000 folks and to my surprise has become an
important part of peoples' lives, as many have told me.

It's not very sophisticated technologically but seems to get the job
done. I amalgamate job postings folks send me and send them out in a
simple consistent format that users have said is most useful to them.
Some postings come from other lists and some from my 'network', which
has grown as this has gone on.

I regularly get letters from folks telling me they got jobs through
the list which helped them not to only further their careers but also
avoid real hardship. So I think of it as having a true 'pikuach
nefesh' component.

OK, so what? Well, it's grown to the point that I can't keep up with
it, I fell behind recently and the consequences were . . . bad. So I
signed up my cousin, of whom I'm exceedingly fond, as a volunteer
helper, but I need a few more. It takes about 20 minutes to do and if
there were a few more volunteers each would take a turn once a week or
twice a month. That's a lot of nachas for relatively little effort.
It's not hard to do (after all I can do it) -- just cutting and
pasting -- and I've written out simple directions.

I was thinking retired (or even current) Jewish librarians might be
interested as you understand the importance of directing people to the
right information in a timely way (I always thought I was a kind of
librarian manque, and my dear dear aunt z"l was a librarian of heroic
proportions).

If anyone is interested in adding a "high impact" good deed to their
probably already overloaded plate please let me know. The need is
real. And if you or anyone else would like to sign up to receive the
job listings go to hizdamnuyot.com

Shavua Tov,

Martin Kaminer
