We are a very small synagogue
library & we use Dewey #s (like our local public library) with very
broad, basic subject heading guides. We take them from LC, but cut them
back. Our users tend to look at the shelves rather than the catalog
anyway, so we use a lot of subject shelf tags (history,"cooking" NOT
"cookery", oversize) & or spine tags (Holocaust, short stories,
etc.) Our aim is "friendly environment" & easy access, not a
comprehensive, perfect catalog. Around here too much &/or too technical
information tends to turn people off (& we are a college town)!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Judaica subject headings
Colleagues - I'be begun to organize a small synagogue library, about 1500
volumes. I've decided on Weine classification and will use
Librarything for cataloguing. I am now
exploring subject heading guides. I'd like any advice
based on experience. What do you use? How detailed need the subject
headings be? Is broad and basic better? Should I take them right
from LC records? Anything you can tell me is welcome.
