I read it and thought it was a great book for discussion. I think our kids see much worse on TV and at the movies - more graphic, just as unethical and disturbing. The opening scene is shocking and uncomfortable, especially being that it's in the sanctuary - that part of it seems a bit unbelievable but many teens would just find it plain gross! I don't think it should be censored for that and the reader is as shocked as Rachel . What I liked about the book was that she began to resolve her emotional turmoil - that it finally did come out and get addressed without being preachy. Her withdrawal and emotional response seemed realistic to me. I don't have a strong teen patron base and haven't purchased the book yet. I would love to hear from teen readers. I could see it being a terrific book for a book group.

I read the novel and found it accessible, interesting and worthwhile, but the pivotal opening event is troubling, and how many teenagers will be able to push beyond the specifics of that scene and gain a meaningful overview? I've been asked to keep it in our library collection, but not to recommend it outright to our teens. Frankly, I fully understand the concern. How do others feel? Hasafran is an insightful community! Help me come to peaceful terms with this book! Many thanks, Amy Turim Librarian, Temple Emanuel Kensington, MD
