Haim,
 Congratulation ! This is  a fun job. Keep in mind that a synagogue library is 
not an academic institution. When I started working in a synagogue library I 
got carried  away and purchased resources that never circulated.
AJL developed several bibliographies of basic books for synagogue libraries. 
A few things to take into consideration are:
Who will use the library ? Congregants, Religious school teachers,  Religious 
school students, Fiction readers, people who plan to become Jews by choice,  
non-members etc. 
I will involve the Rabbis as well. 
Please check the bibliography bank on AJL  website, but,  keep in mind that the 
bibliographies' authors did not update them.  The list is searchable and can be 
very helpful.
