I suggested Atonement earlier. I’m reading it again now, it’s better the second
time.
Also, I need to re-read Crime & Punishment regarding atonement--but there was
redemption/salvation, as I recall.

It takes a while for the main character to atone but the first book I could
think of was Singer's Kuntsnmakher fun Lublin (דער קונצנמאכער פון לובלין). I
haven't read the English translation but I assume the story is close to the
original.
