A most joyful almost summer and Convention to one and all
Also, I need to re-read Crime & Punishment regarding atonement--but
there wass redemption/salvation, as I recall.
My recall exactly. It's hard to get some redemption/salvation without a
little atonement on the side. At any rate....
...my definitive vote goes for Harry Potter, a 7-part book in which
Atonement is the name of the game. Oddly enough, when readers are asked
who their favourite pivotal character is in the HP series almost no one
ever says Harry Potter, but instead Sirius Black or Severous Snape.
While Black is guilty of mega-immaturity and making a gloriously stupid
mistake that gets just about everybody killed, his eventual stay in
Azkaban Prison could never lead to atonement because, unless being young
is a crime unto itself, there never was a real crime.
However, on the same night that Black's stupidity gets everybody
toasted, Black's contemporary, Severous Snape, the true hero of the
series, full-well knowing and with premeditation commits some truly
heinous crimes. He realizes the depth of his crimes and pleads for a
chance at redemption sentencing himself to spending the rest of his life
in a prison of his own choosing, beggng with every breath for atonement
right up to a most painful and welcomed death.
There're several reasons why every kid on the planet holds this series
in awe and it's certainly not because of some broom riding kid with a
fluffy pet owl who hangs out with the Bobbsey Twins.
