CHICAGO - By popular demand, ALA TechSource announces a** new iteration**of its 
exciting workshop, Creating Subject Guides for the 21st Century 
Library<http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=3475> with Buffy Hamilton. 
This 90-minute workshop will take place at 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 
30, 2013.

The subject guide has been a valuable tool for school and academic librarians 
for decades, first as a print resource and more recently as Web pages and 
Web-based documents. In this ALA TechSource Workshop, Buffy Hamilton of The 
Unquiet Library<http://theunquietlibrary.wordpress.com/> will show how to 
revitalize the subject guide as a dynamic, customizable, social resource by 
integrating it into the Web.

Topics include:

  *   How to use free resources such as widgets, RSS feeds, mashups, cloud 
computing, videos and social bookmarking to create streams of quality 
information;
  *   Understanding the concept of social scholarship;
  *   How to use non-traditional social media sources of information such as 
blogs, Twitter streams, podcasts and YouTube in your subject guides;
  *   Free and subscription-based tools you can use to host these information 
portals/research guides.

Buffy Hamilton is the learning strategist for the Cleveland Public Library in 
Cleveland, Ohio. Previously, she was a high school librarian and teacher at The 
Unquiet Library in Canton, Ga. Buffy has more than 20 years of experience in 
public education as a high school English teacher, technology integration 
specialist and librarian.   Her interests include social media, participatory 
learning and culture, ethnographic studies, digital composition, personal 
learning environments, critical pedagogy and social scholarship. She was a 2011 
Library Journal Mover and Shaker, and blogs at The Unquiet Librarian and ALA 
Learning.
