Alba,
My personal summer project this year was to rid myself of analog media,
which—being a child of the 80’s—meant lots and lots of audio cassettes. A lot
of people swear by Audacity (it’s really good), but I used an old software
program that I had on hand called Analog Recorder. It was part of a suite of
small programs in the Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition add-on pack to
Windows XP (it’s no longer available in stores, but can be found for a very
small cost on
Ebay<http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2054436.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xmicrosoft+plus+digital+media+edition&_nkw=microsoft+plus+digital+media+edition&_sacat=0&_from=R40>).
It was very easy to use: I just connected my cassette player’s headphone
port to my computer’s audio-in port using a male/male audio cable (which—as Ted
said—can be had on the cheap), adjusted the recording level and recorded. I
was even able to set it and forget it for the length of the tape. The software
removed all of the tape hiss and gave me high quality audio files.
Audacity is a free download with even more features than Analog Recorder so
it’s probably the way to go. Whatever you do, don’t spend $600.00 for a
dedicated machine.

Does it have to be that expensive?
Why couldn’t you find a decent cassette player (you probably already have one),
get an output cable ($4.00 at radio shack), and connect it to the audio input
on your desktop PC? There are any number of cheap (and freeware) audio
digitizing programs – Audacity comes to mind – that will accept that input and
write to the hard drive of your desktop computer.
Your computer probably already has a CD-DVD burner, so there is no cost there.
(Although a new burner can be purchased for $25.00).
Turn on, plug in, and go away for a while.
Yes, it will take some time to do each tape, but at a *far* lower cost than
$600.00 for a dedicated machine.

Subject: [ha-Safran] What do you do w/ valuable audiocassettes?
By valuable I mean lectures of prominent guest speakers, classes taught by the
rabbis or by professors who've spoken at the synagogue, scholars-in-residence,
and so on.
They can be transferred to CD but it is very expensive. The piece of
equipment that does this costs approx. $600.00, and paying a service to do it
one by one would cost even more than that. Nearly $20.00 per hour of tape.
Some say: transfer them to mp3 format, and then burn to CD. Time-consuming
and questionable quality.
If anyone else has dealt with this issue, please write to me directly.
