Holocaust Testimony Indexer USC Shoah Foundation - The Institute for Visual History and Education is seeking independent contractors to index a collection of Holocaust/World War II era (1939-1945) testimonies. The testimonies are from the oral history archives of the Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco Holocaust Center.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Using judgment and discretion, index video interviews of Holocaust witnesses utilizing USC Shoah Foundation's proprietary indexing software and methodology: * Index biographical information taken from documents that may accompany testimonies (ex. release forms, questionnaires, newspaper clippings, etc.). * Watch video interviews and assign indexing terms from a controlled vocabulary of Holocaust terminology. * Conduct research to resolve specific indexing issues. * Complete indexing of testimonies and any associated research. Indexers must attend approximately 6-weeks of paid initial training (Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM). After the training period, work hours are flexible and indexers can work from home. On average, indexing assignments are expected to take up to 25 hours a week to complete. A 9-month commitment is expected from each indexer. QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications: * Fluency in English. * Fluency in any of the following languages highly preferred: Czech, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, or Yiddish. * Preferably MA-level or higher degree in European history, political science, or Jewish studies with coursework in Holocaust history, or equivalent knowledge. * Familiarity with relevant names (geographic and proper) and cultures. * Excellent research skills. * Attention to detail. * Computer proficiency. Experience with the Windows environment operating system and applications, Word processing experience. * Ability to take constructive criticism. * Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. * Library science background and/or cataloging or indexing experience desirable. * Ability to view and work with Holocaust-related material on a sustained basis.
