Hi Michelle,

I am the volunteer librarian for our new temple library at the Garden City
Jewish Center, and I found that the best use of my time and the temple's funds
has been to catalog our small but growing collection with an online system
called LibraryThing<http://www.librarything.com>. Borrowers can browse the
catalog 24/7, and the cost is $25 for a lifetime membership. As you enter each
book, most of the pertinent information, including an image of the book's
cover, fills in automatically. I generally add tags. Since Dewey is limited for
a Jewish library, we catalog the books according to the Elazar system, which
has worked out well. On LibraryThing, inside the box labelled "Dewey" I write
the word "Elazar" followed by the Elazar catalog number. I use A Classification
System for Libraries of
Judaica<http://www.amazon.com/Classification-System-Libraries-Judaica/dp/0765759837>
by David and Daniel Elazar as my cataloging "bible." And by sharing your
LibraryThing administrative password, you can easily train volunteers to assist
you in adding books to your catalog.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Reform Synagogue Library Budget Question for Non Funded
Libraries

:
I have been given funding by my reform synagogue's endowment fund to automate a
2500 volume library and buy supplies. I have chosen Library World online
automation software. The price is $425 a year. I have only been given funding
for one year. How do synagogues without a library budget pay for this software
every year? I am a retired disabled librarian who is volunteering to do this as
I am able. All the books have Elazar numbers on the spine labels from a
previous volunteer who was not a degreed librarian. They are all faded away
and falling off. No card catalog or OPAC was ever made before.

Sincerely Michelle Gail Sandler
