Jerusalem Books Ltd Newsletter Passover 2014
Dear Friends,
I would like to begin by noting that often a certain topic of interest and
authors will produce multiple, parallel publications at a particular moment
in time.
Recently, I saw two different works both by is a distinguished Prof. Yochai
Oppenheimer. Omanut Ha-Simptom, the Art of Symptoms, Reading Aharon
Appelfeld's Fiction, is one such work published along with Ktzia Alon (who
was mentioned in reference to Hebrew Mizrahi poetry in my last Jerusalem
Books Newsletter). Gama Publishing, Tel Aviv, 2014. The book is a 'new
reading,' of Ahraon Appelfelds work exploring the issues of exile, galut,
anti-semitism and the symptoms of these issues, pressures, conceptions have
on his writing. Cat. 83340 $24.00 This caught my eye for
several reasons, one of which was the very recent title, 'Mi-Rahov Ben
Gurion le-shara al Rashid, From Ben Gurion Street to Shari al Rashid,
978-965-235-175-3, published by Yad Ben Zvi. This book also is on Mizrahi
Hebrew prose. The author is a professor at Tel Aviv University and a leading
authority on Hebrew Literature. In addition this area of research and
analysis regarding modern Hebrew writing from an Israeli or Ashkenazi or
galut or Mizrahi perspective and style has become a significant field in the
world of Hebrew Literature, Israel Studies and literary criticism. Cat.
82934 $ 30.00
Yad Tabenkin of the Kibbutz movement, Magnes have published, 'Bein ha-prati
le-tsiburi,' Private and Public: Women in the Kibbutz and the Moshav.' The
book is edited by Sylvie Fogiel - Bijaoui and Rachel Sharaby, in Hebrew with
a 14 page English Summary, isbn 978-965-282-112-6. The book is published
also with the assistance of the Academic College of Ashkelon. The book
examines the roles of women on the Kibbutz and Moshav before and after the
founding of the State of Israel. The development of new roles and identities
as well as gender equality or lack thereof. The roll back or changes in
recent years as well as the issue of collectiveness in areas such as child
rearing are researched in this collection of articles by different authors,
scholars. Cat. 82758 $ 40.00
The field of Hebrew Language and Literature is broad and deep. It is an area
we at Jerusalem Books are proud to navigate. One important sub-field is the
area of Shira Mizrahit, Hebrew Poetry of the 'edot ha-mizrah,' the
"eastern," Separdic Jewry from Morocco to Iran. Erez Biton is releasing a
new book (when we don't yet know), of Hebrew Poetry, 'Le-Fa'ate mizrakh
kadima,' Last year we distributed widely Nofim havushe einayim,'
Blindfolded Landscapes,' which is especially significant as this author, a
recognized leader in this field is also, blind.( Cat 82003)
Also in this area is the work of Katzia Alon, and her new book, 'Shoshanat
Ha-Meri ha-shekhora.' The book is important, scholarly and involves literary
analysis, criticism and comparison between leading authors of 'Mizrahi,'
poetry including a chapter on Erez Biton, Roni Somek and Haviva Pedaya to
mention a few. Cat. 83283 $22.00
Yediot Hemed has published, 'Melakhim,' 'Angels,' by the celebrated Israeli
Author, Yoram Kaniuk. Not to be missed by anyone interested in modern
Israeli Hebrew Literature. Isbn 978-965-545-794-0. Cat 83503 $20.00
Ram Oren, a successful, popular and well to do author has written a novel,
'Ima,' (Mother), published by Keshet, isbn 978-965-7130-46-9. While I wish
him continued success and you are likely to be interested in adding this
book to the collection, this author has been a supporter of some recent
unfortunate legislation to regulate or interfere in the book market. The
law, entitled, the "Protection of Literature.law," eliminated discounts on
newly published books. For those interested, I will be happy to share my
views on the law. However, at this time suffice to say the law seems to
protect the royalties of best selling authors and the profit margins of
book chains at the expense of new authors and the reading, book buying
consumers. Cat. 83550 $30.00
Before moving on, and on the more popular side of modern Hebrew prose, is a
book by Bookie Naeh an Israeli crime writer. It is entitled, Ha-Hevre
ha-Tovim, the Good Guys, or might I reference a popular American Crime film,
the Wise Guys, I think it was. The author is something of a crime journalist
or local Tel Aviv crime tour guide and this is his latest. To me, this topic
is of increasing interest as criminal assassinations proliferate on Israeli
streets. Cat 83291 $28.00
Shalom Albeck has published a monumental and important work, in
English, 'Introduction to Jewish Law in Talmudic Times.' The book is
published by Bar Ilan University isbn 978-965-226-448-0. The author in his
preface writes that "the contents of this book are founded primarily on the
conclusions reached in my studies on Talmudic Law, published in my six
books." He goes on to list chapter by chapter in this book which is based on
chapters in his earlier works in Hebrew. The work has been translated from
Hebrew into English and four different translators are credited, Edward
Levin, Samuel Wosner, Ben Zion Tartak and Frank Myers. The work is
translated from Hebrew and was originally published in 1999. The book
explains and defines the differences between Written and Oral Law. The book
delves into Mishna, Midrash and the relationship between accepted norms of
law, innovations and traditional Jewish customs. There are chapters on the
creation, change and termination of rights including property, sales,
contracts, bailments, damages, marriage and divorce, wills and inheritance.
This work is important in the teaching, research and understanding of Jewish
Law, Halakha and Talmud. The book is, and will be an authoritative source
and reference work. The book is much more, as it is also a guide to Talmud
discourse, dispute and reasoning. It is eye opening in it's definition of
the interpretation and development of law versus custom, consensus and
deviation. The need for and implementation of reason, rationality are
central to the work. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, this book makes
the teachings of this expert in the field, clear and accessible to scholars
and students everywhere. Cat.83323 $ 59.00
Seemingly mundane halakha, Sefer he-Mishpat ha-Mekhira on the sale of
Passover Hametz, leavening(s) is a scholarly rabbinic work with wider
aspects. While examining this book which presents as a self published,
'sefer kodesh,' on holiday ritual modern halakha I was surprised by how such
a book can contain areas of analysis much deeper than at first glance. While
I would place this in the exclusion category for almost all Jewish academic
library collections it nevertheless starts with Sephardi halakha and custom
regarding the sale of Hametz before Passover but leads to examination of
such topics as Agency and competence under Jewish Law and also Jewish Civil
Law, contracts and relations with gentiles and converts. Just for a moment
let us think of the convert within Jewish History. Not just those who have
converted to Judaism but those who have converted to Christianity and Islam
who then interact with the minority Jewish community. Finally, I was
interested and impressed with parts of the book which dealt with the
obligations and relative competence of handicapped, impaired (or challenged)
individuals and the acceptance and reliance on the writings and opinions of
secular experts cited in this field. Cat 83306 $ 38.00
Ner Hama'aravi, on the Or Hayim, in other words R'Hayim Ben Attar. A Sage of
Morrocco of the (late 17th), 18th Century CE is a rabbinic bio with
teachings and legends, much bibliographic and regional, community history.
This is source material for ongoing and future research into the philosophy
and history of Sepahardi Jewry from Sale, Fez, Meknes in Morrocco to
Alexandria and Acco, Tiberius and Jerusalem of the 18th Century CE. At

For Passover and Jewish Libraries interested in liturgy, specifically Pesah
Hagadot, Urim has published, 'the Night that Unites,' Passover Haggadah,
teachings stories and questions from Rabbi Kook, Soloveichik and Rabbi
Carlebach, isbn 978-965-524-153-2. The book is written and edited by Aaron
Goldscheider with artwork by Aitana Perlmutter. This 300 page work is both
serious in terms of 20th Century CE Jewish Thought / Philosophy and
practical and usefull as a source and guide foe the Passover Seder.
Recommended. Cat. 83490 $ 38.00
