All romanization depends on whose rules you are using, and that depends on
language. Since you are Swiss, and routinely deal with French, German and
English in your work, just consider how the “Shin” (ש) is Romanized in those
three languages. With proper nouns, remember that most people do not pronounce
their names in according to what some government agency decrees, but will
Romanize their name based on factors that make it impossible to have a
systematic Romanization that also reflects what people in the “real world” do.
What we librarians do when we Romanize (transliterate Hebrew script to English
script), it will result in Romanized forms that frequently clash with what
non-librarians do in their daily lives (and put on their title pages).

This, by the way, is the essence of the argument against Romanization and in
favor of using original script.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Transliteration question

Dear Safranim

Can anyone give me an advise concerning the transliteration of the Hebrew „י“?
The rules say, it is to be transliterated as „y”, since it is a consonant. But
there are so many cases, where the consonant is followed by the vowel „i“. And
there is also the case of the double „יי“.

Here some examples:

1) Should Jerusalem be transliterated as „Yerushalayim“ or as
„Yerushalaym“?

2) What about a name like Epstein. Should it be transliterated as
“Epshtayin” or as “Epshtayn”?

3) And the word “קדמוניות“: should it be transliterated as „kadmoniyot“ or
as „kadmonyot“?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

Kerstin Paul
