Hi all,
We had a donation of the 1906 encyclopedia from a synagogue member. The books were not in great condition and I didn't have the shelf space for them anyway. I wracked my brain for something to do with them (the donor is a retired university librarian and has been a good supporter of the synagogue's library). Ultimately, the synagogue's Education VP (an artist) suggested using them as art. There is a ledge in the synagogue on one wall over the sanctuary and we stacked the books (some on their sides with the pages facing out so you could see the gold leaf on the edges of the pages and some stacked upright with the pages open slightly so they would stay standing) as an homage to the "people of the book". I wrote an explanatory note regarding the donation, framed it, and hung it on the wall beneath the ledge. I was happy, the donor was happy (though a bit taken aback at first), and we have a lovely conversation piece as one enters the sanctuary.
    Good luck,

Bernice,

My synagogue is in a similar situation and we even have a set of encyclopedias that were published on 1906. I would have kept them on the shelf but the rabbi said take them off.

I have contacted local universities  ( starting with those with Judaica departments) to offer them first .  I believe I found a professor who will take them.

Good luck.

We have a small synagogue library.  We are weeding our reference collection.  Have other librarians kept older encyclopedias in their collections?  Such as Encyclopedia Judaica  1972 and yearbooks for it 1983-1992, and 1990-1991? Unfortunately we have few people  using  our library, ( other than  the children's collection) so I cannot factor patron's use to help me evaluate whether or not to keep these books.   Thank you for any and all responses.  You may respond through the list-serve or to my e-mail.
