In response to Etta Gold'as query re: kishkes (i.e., the anatomical feature), there are numerous books about Yiddish proverbs and phrases. One of the major caveats here, though, is that these are not all necessarily in Yiddish. Thus, knowledge of Yiddish (in particular) may prove beneficial. One of the works I have used in the past for Yiddish proverbs is: Yudishe shprikhverter. יודישע שפריכווערטער.
Ignatz Bernstein 1836-1909 ed. בערנשטײן, איגנאץ, 1836-1909 רעד. Warschau 1912 This is available at the YIVO Institute in NY (and elsewhere). Other possibilities may be: A dictionary of Yiddish slang & idioms. Fred Kogos New York : Citadel Press 1968, c1967 Hooray for Yiddish! : a book about English Leo Rosten 1908-1997. New York : Simon and Schuster 1984, c1982 Born to kvetch : Yiddish language and culture in all its moods Michael Wex 1954- New York : St. Martin's Press 2005 Just say nu : Yiddish for every occasion (when English just won't do) Michael Wex 1954- New York : St. Martin's Press 2007 I would also recommend consulting the online catalogs of the YIVO Institute in NY or the National Yiddish Book Center in MA. Both of these institutions specialize in Yiddish language, culture, and related matter. I have a very intelligent patron who has posed this question: I'm looking for anything about kishkes (the body part, not the food). I seem to remember some sage comment about Jewish culture being located symbolically in the kishkes, but that's as much as I can remember about it. Where would I look for rumination on Jewish culture and guts? Please help me direct him to some good sites ? All I can find is recipes. Thank you very much!
