We are all preaching to the choir. For more than 25 years I have been writing articles about the expertise of librarians and what they add to the world of knowledge. Unfortunately the message has been lost on even the most educated readers. The public sees the public face of the collection and circulation. They don't see the skill and preparation it takes to create and maintain a collection. When I was a synagogue librarian, the congregation never took advantage of my skills. Once they had a meeting with a consultant right in the library. The consultant knew less about the topic than I did. They could have saved their money and just talked with me. NO! Outsiders are the experts (Sarcasm!).

What would happen if we all wrote to the Emanuel rabbi and president the same words of praise we have shared here? What would happen if we shared with our administration, students, parents and other stakeholders one great thing we accomplished this year? Better yet what if we just shared the routine things we do every day to make our institutions a better place?

Dear Liza,

You cannot imagine how pained I am by your message. You have served Emanuel-El's library for many years in an exemplary way.
