Newsletter Jerusalem Books Ltd Summer - Sept 2015

Dear Friends,

Now that Labor Day has passed and before the High Holidays is a good time to
take notice of important titles published in Israel.

Dvir has published Avraham Burg's new book, 'Hine Yamim Ba'im,' In The
Coming Days, isbn 978-965-566-078-4. This is a thoughtful book by a former
MK and Chairman of the Jewish Agency, who recently joined the Jewish Arab
party Hadash and has advocated pressure on Israel to achieve peace. Cat.
86146 $27.00

Intracultural Rhetoric, Retorica Ben Tarbutir, by Bruria Margolin has been
published by Resling. Cat. 86149 $ 25.00

Also published by Resling is Shlomo Sand's new book Historia be'dimdumim :
hirhurim al zman ve'emet, History in Twilight. This provocative author also
wrote, When and How the Jewish People Were Invented 978-965-552-133-7, 2012,
and How I Ceased To Be A Jew, 978-965-552-588-5 from 2013. In Hebrew both
titles begin, Matay ve- Eikh.. His earlier two titles were published by
Kinneret. Wonder why the change? Cat 86122 $28.00

In Hebrew Literature note: the Archivist, by Anat Levin published by
Hotsa'ot Afik. Cat. 86039 $ 28.00

Aharon Appelfeld's latest has come out. Long Summer Nights, Laylot Kayits
arukhim, published by Kinneret Zemora Bitan Dvir. Another must have/don't
miss! Cat 86229 $ 22.00

One of my most common topics is the fact that many books overlap subject
areas and have interdisciplinary aspects and implications. An important new
example is the book, 'From Telshe to Telshe, Mi Telz ad Telz, the Diary of
Rabbi Chaim Stein 1939-1944. At first glance a Rabbinic biography but the
dates and location alone make it much more than that. The author a young
Lithuanian rabbinic student writes a diary of his escape from the Nazis into
Stalinist, Communist Russia. The author wrote five notebooks in Hebrew. This
is important Holocaust history and documentation. It is a first hand
observation of Stalinist Russia, ethnic relations, interaction with
communist agricultural collectives and the struggle to remain Jewish. The
book has a forty page Introduction in English, serious footnotes on each
notebook - chapter, supplements on the list of Yeshiva students, halakhic
issues referenced to the notebook and specific dates, Russian terms in
Hebrew. This book is important and a source of inspiration and research in
future years. Cat. 86103 $ 38.00

This leads us nicely into the subject area of Rabbinics aka Sifre Kodesh.
Machon Yerushalayim has published Sefer Gevurot H,' by R' Lowe the Maharal
of Prague. The book is edited by Yehoshua David Hartman and is vol 1 of what
will be a series. The work is very rabbinic scholarly, with some text and
pages filled with footnotes analyzing and referencing the text and concepts.
Cat 86230 $36.00

A two volume set has been published. It is the classic Kabbala of Sefer
Raziel ha-Malakh and the second book Sefer Ha-Bahir. Although symbolically
attributed to Adam the works are early 11th -13th Cent CE and are reworks of
Geonic texts. The books include philosophy and practical Kabbala, of amulets
and spells. What is unusual to me is that the works are with the commentary
of Rabbi Kanievsky of the Haredi, Lithuanian, Brisk / Mir Yeshiva stream,
very influential in the ultra orthodox world today but not generally
associated with Jewish Mysticism and Kabbala.. (2 vols.s) Cat 86231 $
49.00

In closing let me add a personal philosophical comment on life and the world
of books.

Amidst this tumultuous world with great technological advancement and much
senseless hostility some things remain constant. The need for and love of,
learning and the creative drives for expression.

We are grateful for those things and your interest and support for our work
our goals and us and we wish you all much joy and health in the coming year
and years. Shana Tova from all of us at Jerusalem Books ltd.

Sincerely,

Jeff Spitzer,
